Re|set [rɪ'zɛt ], der od. das; -s, -s [zu engl. to reset = neu (ein)stellen; wieder einrichten, aus: re- (lat. re-) = wieder u. to set = (ein)stellen]:
a) Wiederherstellung eines Anfangs-, Ausgangszustandes (z. B. bei einem elektronischen System);
b) (EDV) Neustart eines Computers.

Reset
 
[dt. Zurücksetzen] der, auch das, allgemein ein Signal, durch das eine Komponente in ihren Ausgangszustand zurückversetzt wird; im engeren Sinn der komplette Neustart des Computers aus dem laufenden Betrieb heraus, der durch Drücken eines speziellen Schalters (Reset-Schalter oder Reset-Taste) eingeleitet wird. Die Abläufe entsprechen denen beim Kaltstart nach dem Einschalten des Computers (vollständiger Boot-Vorgang).
 
 
Bei der Installation von Software wird nicht immer der Neustart des Systems verlangt. Funktioniert jedoch das neue Programm nicht einwandfrei, ist ein solcher Neustart immer ratsam.
 
Fehlt der Reset-Schalter, muss bei Abstürzen usw. stattdessen der Ein-/Ausschalter benutzt werden. Der Einschalter funktioniert während des Rechnerbetriebs als Ausschalter, wenn er etwa vier Sekunden gedrückt gehalten wird.
